Police Motorcycle Operator Training

For almost two decades, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. and the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety have worked in partnership to present the nation's premier training programs for police motorcyclists.

Focusing on various practical exercises that stress low-speed maneuverability, evasion techniques and high-speed braking skills, Police Motorcycle Operator Training students spend a large portion of the course in the saddle. Students practice practical exercises and receive riding instruction supplemented with classroom instruction and demonstrations of tactical techniques.

Students are tested on course exercises as well as in a multiple choice written format. Students must successfully complete the testing process to complete this course. Absence from training may result in termination from the class. Final determination is at the discretion of NUCPS Staff.

Course Content

  • Machine nomenclature
  • Braking, counter-steering and evasive maneuvers
  • Slow maneuvering
  • Control
  • Braking
  • Curve negotiation

Motorcycles Provided
In addition to our experienced instructional staff and recently revised curriculum, our program is unique in that Harley-Davidson's Police and Fleet Sales Division provides a fleet of ABS equipped FLHP Road King motorcycles which allow students to train in basic skills applicable to law enforcement motorcycling.

Course Materials
Students must bring the following to class:

  • A full motorcycle endorsement from student’s state of residence. Instructional permits or any other type of temporary or provisional permits will not be accepted.
    • Note: NUCPS and Harley-Davidson Motor Company are not responsible for travel expenses incurred for students found not to be in compliance with this requirement on the first day of class.

  • Full-fingered gloves
  • Above the ankle lace up boots
  • DOT or SNELL certified helmet ("3/4 Shell" recommended)

With the exception of dangerous conditions, students will ride rain or shine. Rain gear is highly recommended. Jeans/BDU pants or equivalent and appropriate t-shirts (no potentially offensive slogans or graphics, please) are typically worn during training.
